my
personal life

I live in Hopkins, MN with my husband and my cat, Oliver.  In my spare time, I enjoy hiking at the MN state parks with my husband and exploring walking paths and trails around the city with some of my friends who are avid walkers.  Baking and cooking from scratch always soothes me after a long day, and it’s comforting and nice to have something yummy to look forward to.  I’m a writer and have written a science fiction book, as well as had my essays submitted to competitions.  I also love to read and learn new things.  I am an internet research fiend and love to read about nutrition, wellness, and health-related topics.  My favorite part of the day is staying up late at night while reading or writing.

my background

I received my Master of Arts from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 2015.  I have worked in the mental health field since 2011 in a variety of roles, including CADI case management, being a house manager of an adult foster care home, and working as a residential, community-based, and outpatient mental health therapist.  I started my own private therapy practice, Marks Therapeutic and Professional Services, LLC in 2020, just before the Pandemic and that is when I first began working with transracial adoptees and their families via telehealth.  I have since worked in Intensive Residential Treatment Services facilities (IRTS), and outpatient and private practice.  Additionally, I majored in Music Performance on the Clarinet in my undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and sometimes incorporate live music performances in my individual therapy sessions as a form of “musical therapy”.

my specializations

My area of specialization is working with transracial and international adoptees and their families; however, I also enjoy working with people who are born into their biological families and are not adopted.  I work with people who have borderline personality disorder, trauma, dissociative disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, psychosis, and grief and loss.   I am trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Brain Gym (which is a Somatic therapy), and will soon be trained in Brainspotting therapy. Furthermore, I enjoy working with couples and find the Gottman Method to be helpful.
